I almost quit playing this spring, you may have wondered what happened to me it’s been a while since my last post. But I’d like to thank Anne for her support and encouragement. I’d especially like to thank her for turning me on to this incredible song. I just love it, it got me playing again. I want to learn to play this really well I told my instructor a few weeks ago. She said okay… pretend you’re a violinist and play it with feeling. Easier said than done. While this is no where near the justice I plan to give to this song it is a start, a tune to mark my progress. For I’ll be practicing this one til I can play it as well as it was played as the sound track to Ken Burns’ The Civil War series on PBS. The version by Evan Stover, Jay Ungar, Matt Glaser, Molly Mason & Russ Barenberg is beautiful. My next post of this tune will be played along with the song. I plan on getting a better microphone to record the sound as I play along with it. I tried it for this post but the feedback was so bad I decided to stay with Photo Booth. So, for all us adult beginners out there when you think you’ve taken the learning curve as far as you can or you get discouraged and want to quit get a great song that stirs you passion to stick with it.

Vickey, CLAP,CLAP,CLAP………..Sounds wonderful, that is a lovely song. Don’t stop now! I love that advice “play like you are a violinist”. I think of that as I play Swing low, Sweet Chariot. Still working on that piece, but it is a break from the lesson book. Which I am now on page 33 after playing for about 9 months. I still have a problem getting that damm little finger to reach for the A but it is getting better. Coward that I am, still haven’t played along with the cd. I’ll have to add that in my practice in the near future. I play a 100 yr old German strad. copy. Sounds impressive but value is equivalent to a beginner set-up. It was given to me by a friend about 40 yrs ago and at 56 that seems like a life time ago. I like the idea of its’ history and hope some will transfer to my fingers, by magic perhaps? I enjoy your clips; keep playing! Kaite
Love my instructors advise too. Sometimes I get so caught up on the technicals that I forget to play. The violin, in my opinion, is the most passionate instrument. It should be played with soul. Some day it will click, I hope. Thanks so much for your comment. If you ever get to the point where you’d like to post a video let me know. We can share it here.
BRAVO! : ) Keep playing, practice makes perfect!!!!
It was good to revisit your playing. So strong and sweet, not syrupy but tender sweet
Vickey, came back for a revisit and what? no new videos : ) I hope all is well with you and that you haven’t stopped playing. I found Ashokan Farewell online and really enjoy that music. I have been playing now for almost 1 & 1/2 years and practice an hour a day. Still on my own though, my budget has no room for a teacher. Keep playing and post another video!
Are you still playing?I am around your age and just started learning fiddle and yep, this song has got me hooked and I hope to learn it, good going and best wishes!
